Rome prosecutors have placed Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, its military chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and other senior military, police and prison officials under investigation over the treatment of Italian activists detained from two Gaza-bound flotillas. France and Spain have opened their own cases.

On 4 October the chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council announced military operations to retake every part of the country the Houthis hold. The same day the Houthis said they had fired missiles and drones at two Saudi Aramco sites. In the last week counted before the announcement, 290 cargo ships passed through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on 22 September, the President of the United States said he had a decision to make on Iran: a deal, or to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” and drive it “into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations.” The White House release on the speech, published the same afternoon, quotes eleven passages. That one is not among them.
